Duff Coal

Fine dry coal (usually anthracite) obtained from a coal-preparation plant. The size range is 3/16 to 0 in (4.8 to 0 mm)

Discard

After mining, coal is crushed and washed to remove the surrounding soil and rock. The mining process itself produces millions of tons of solid waste.

Run-of-Mine (ROM)

The coal delivered from the mine that reports to the coal preparation plant is calledrun-of-mine, or ROM, coal. This is the raw material for the CPP, and consists of coal, rocks, middlings, minerals and contamination.

Slurry

Coal slurry is a mixture of solids (mined coal) and liquids (water or organic) produced by a coal preparation plant.

About Slurry

Coal sludge, also known as slurry, is the liquid coal waste produced by mining activities.

After mining, coal is crushed and washed to remove the surrounding soil and rock.

The washing process generates huge amounts of liquid waste, and the mining process itself produces millions of tons of solid waste.

In general the slurry quality is higher than that of the discard but reclaiming and treatment are far more difficult and expensive.

Slurry even has the potential to be utilized in its raw state provided the moisture content of the initial dried product can be reduced.

Slurry is now being re-treated to produce an acceptable middling’s coal for utilisation as an energy source.

Slurry and raw coal is blended for the power generation sector: dumps with Calorific Values (CV) of better than 16MJ/kg. It has been accepted that discard with a heat value of 16MJ/kg can be utilized in special types of heat generating equipment. Beneficiation of feed coal of this quality will normally produce a good recovery of power station feed-stock or, in many cases, an economically viable recovery of export quality coal.

About Discard

After mining, coal is crushed and washed to remove the surrounding soil and rock. The mining process itself produces millions of tons of solid waste.

“With further decreasing coal reserves, and high demand for energy supply in South Africa.  Discard coal contains significant amounts of usable carbon, and can be seen as a significant resource.

There are at least two potential uses for discard coal: firstly, the beneficiation of discards to yield conventional coal products, and, secondly, the combustion of raw discards in a fluidised bed combustor (FBC).

Utilisation of discard coal is being practice. Discard coal is being re-washed for power station feed, which is blended with coarser coal fractions and sold as export steam coal or power station feed.

The blending of discard and raw coal for the power generation sector: dumps with Calorific Values (CV) of better than 16MJ/kg. It has been accepted that discard with a heat value of 16MJ/kg can be utilized in special types of heat generating equipment. Beneficiation of feed coal of this quality will normally produce a good recovery of power station feed-stock or, in many cases, an economically viable recovery of export quality coal.

Discard dumps with Calorific Values (CV) as low as 14 MJ/kg may well be suitable for upgrading by jigging or dense medium washing.

Changes in environmental legislation and the mine’s realization that discards is a valuable energy source:  Discard is now being re-treated to produce an acceptable middling’s coal for utilisation as an energy source.
